Communications Assistant - Bowie Baysox Baseball Club
 

The Bowie Baysox, Class Double-A Affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, are currently accepting resumes for a  Communications Assistant. This job will span the length of the Baysox 2015 season. The Communications Assistant will be responsible for writing select post-game recaps, writing weekly feature stories and digitally scoring games at Prince George’s Stadium using the MiLB Gameday application. College credit must be received through this position and the successful candidate will be compensated on a per-home game basis.
 

Responsibilities include:
 

  • Conduct post game interviews; write and distribute post game recaps
  • Interview Baysox players, coaches and front office staff for Baysox game program and online feature stories
  • Aid in the compilation of daily game notes and statistics for coaching staff, media and radio broadcasters
  • Update standings, lineup cards, box scores and press box materials for each game
  • Help generate content for Baysox social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, etc.)
  • Assist with daily upkeep of content on team website (www.baysox.com), including posting game stories, feature stories, upcoming promotions and statistical data for home and road games
  • Design graphics to make website and social media attractive and useful as a sales tool
  • Perform duties as Gameday stats stringer during Baysox home games – must complete Gameday pitch-by-pitch training with representatives from MLB Advanced Media prior to start of season.

Qualifications include:
 

  • Must be working toward degree in communications, journalism or related field
  • Previous sports writing experience and familiarity with AP style preferred
  • Exceptional (and demonstrable) knowledge of baseball and how to score a baseball game
  • Strong computer proficiency (Windows OS and Windows-based software) and the ability to quickly learn and operate new software
  • Regular availability nights and weekends (majority of home games during the 2015 season)
  • Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite software (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) is preferred.
  • Experience in a baseball press box is a plus
  • A "team player" with a great attitude, including but not limited to a willingness to make and learn from mistakes and the ability to work closely and cooperatively (and take direction from) our front-office staff and/or other game-day employees

The Bowie Baysox Baseball Club is seeking dynamic individuals who strive to succeed both personally and professionally and who live to sell in a competitive marketplace.

Position Summary:

This position will work with both corporate and community-oriented customers to renew current ticket plan, group ticket and suite accounts and will focus on prospecting and selling new group opportunities for the Bowie Baysox. The successful Group Events Manager will be expected to use cold calls, face-to-face meetings and email marketing as methods for building lasting relationships with local businesses and individuals. The ability to work as a part of team is a must!

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Actively prospect, research and sell group ticket packages, including nightly rental luxury suites, premium party areas and seating bowl options through various sales means including extensive cold calling.
• Use a full catalog of inventory items (Group Seats, Full & Mini Packages, Food & Beverage Options, Suites, Meetings Space, etc) to customize a comprehensive hospitality package that fits a clients needs
• Handle incoming sales calls from sales prospects
• Meet or exceed weekly and monthly sales goals in the areas of season, group and partial-plan ticket packages
• Maintain computerized records of all season and group customers
• Provide superior customer service to clients - existing ticket holders, prospects, and single game customers
• Sell other special projects when necessary
• Be present at all home games and special events to service customers, establish new relationships and help manage the game day duties
• Additional responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent degree in Sales, Marketing or Business; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• 1-2 years Sales and/or Customer Service experience, preferably within the sports industry
• Proficient skills in computer including experience with MS Office products such as Word, Excel, Outlook, etc. and ability to learn and master new software programs.
• Excellent oral and written communication and customer service problem solving skills.
• Strong ability to work independently and in a team environment
• Must be willing and able to work extended hours including, nights, weekends and holidays
• Minor League Baseball experience preferred by not required

Other Skills and Abilities:

Successful candidate will have prior sales experience preferably in the sports industry. Candidate must have strong time management and communication skills, be well organized, and be able to contribute to a team environment. Candidate must be able to handle multiple projects, multi-task changing priorities, meet deadlines and achieve objectives. Candidate must be a self-starter with a strong desire and inner motivation to succeed.

The Bowie Baysox Baseball Club, Class AA Affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles are seeking highly motivated and energetic candidates for our Seasonal position of Mascot & Community Operations Assistant for the time period of February 2, 2015 through September 3, 2015.

Requirements:

The Baysox are looking for an individual that is looking to gain experience in the sports industry or has a passion for mascoting or marketing. Individual must have a flexible schedule and be able to work all Baysox home games. Candidates who have completed a four year college degree, or be working toward a degree is a plus but not necessary. Position starts February 2, 2015 and runs through September 3, 2015. This is a seasonal position paid bi-weekly. Local candidates are preferred.


Responsibilities Include:

Mascot Operations
• Perform as “Louie” and/or "Rocko," the Baysox Mascots at all Community Appearances in season and off-season and all Baysox Home Games
• Perform as Louie and or Rocko in a professional manner in the stadium and at all off-site community appearances
• Help to research, pursue and schedule opportunities for “Louie” and "Rocko" to appear at community events and generate revenue from appearances
• Maintain and use all mascot costumes by adhering to a rigorous cleaning schedule and alerting manager of repairs that are needed in a timely manner
• Assist in creating skits for promotional entertainment


Community Outreach
• Make appearances at community events to promote Bowie Baysox Baseball, Louie's Kids Club and other stadium events
• Distribute Baysox information designed to help increase attendance at games and stadium events
• Personally interact with Baysox fans inside and outside of the stadium either in costume or out of costume when needed.
• Conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times.


Promotions
• Work with the marketing staff to design, develop and implement promotional activities designed to be fun, interactive and to help sell tickets
• Help execute Louie’s Birthday Party by contacting and securing appearances by area mascots while developing pre-game and in-game promos that entertain fans
Requirements:
• Ability to work flexible hours for the duration of the job period
• Ability to work all event dates (71 home games and additional stadium events as needed)
• Extensive Night & weekend work will be required
• Maintain a professional attitude and conduct at all times, especially while representing the Bowie Baysox organization.

Qualifications
• Motivated Individuals with the desire to gain experience in professional sports
• Outgoing & creative personality with a willingness and desire to have fun
• Previous customer service experience is a plus
• Willingness to perform wacky promotional activities on-field and in the community

• Previous mascot performance experience preferred (but not necessary)
• Experience and ability to translate and/or converse in Spanish (not required but is a plus)

Description
The Bowie Baysox are looking for outgoing, dedicated, and creative students to become a part of the Baysox Orange Ambassadors (Student Ambassador Internship Program) for the 2015 season. This opportunity is for students who are looking to pursue a career in the sports industry. Students will gain valuable experience working in the front office, in marketing, sales and group events, operations, public relations, baseball operations, ticketing, community relations, sponsorships and more. This ambassador program is unpaid and is ONLY for students obtaining college credit.
 

As an Orange Ambassador, you are required to:
• Be a current undergraduate or graduate student seeking credit hours
• Commit to work a minimum of 400 hours over the course of the internship period (May-August 2015)
• Be committed to the betterment of the Bowie Baysox through your individual efforts


All Orange Ambassadors will be training in the operations of the Marketing Department, including but not limited to: Conception and execution of single game promotional events, in-game promotions, marketing/sales information distribution, data collection and entry, community appearances and other duties as assigned. Orange Ambassadors will also gain experience in another department(s) as the focus of their internship.


Department experiences may entail the following:


• Ticketing/Group Events: Learning Box Office skills through hands on ticket processing using the Baysox ticketing system; Assisting the Director of Ticket Operations and Group Sales Department in research, set-up and execution of both Baysox and non-baseball group events in stadium under the direction of the Director of Ticket Operations; facilitating the sales and execution of create-a-group events during the course of the season and other duties as assigned.

• Game Entertainment: Assisting the marketing Department in facilitating pre-game ceremonies including performances, ceremonial first pitches, color guards, Field of Dreams Program and National Anthem performance groups. May also have a hand in the on-field game presentation and may operate one live video camera during the course of game presentation and non-baseball events.

Public Relations/Baseball Information Operations: Assisting Communications Manager by providing content for BayWatch Game Day Program and Press Releases for in-season events; help to design graphics and fliers for in-season events and promotions; updating rosters and statistics.

• Sponsorship: Helping facilitate current sponsorship partners through execution of marketing programs in and out of stadium; shadowing Director of Sponsorship and serve as concierge to sponsors present on game days; research new sponsorship inventory items and potential sponsor leads; conceiving and pitching sponsor-driven character promotions; assist Director of Sponsorships with specific events for customer creation; assist in editing and production of in-season and end-of-season Proofs of Performance plus other duties as assigned.

• Community Relations: Assisting Director of Marketing & Community Programs Manager with player and mascot appearances, Fan Donation Requests, in-season Kids Club Events and assisting in execution of various school based programs across the state of Maryland and DC plus other duties as assigned.

• Stadium Operations and Grounds: Assisting in day-to-day facility operations; assisting in set-up and tear down of events; overseeing game day employees and facilitate operation of stadium parking lot; assisting Grounds Crew with field maintenance before and in games; other duties as assigned.

Monthly Training Sessions:
Each member of the Baysox Orange Ambassadors will have the opportunity to take part in a monthly training session. These sessions will give Orange Ambassadors more knowledge of the sports industry and help to prepare for the job market.
