Communications: Communications Department Management
Communications Manager - Full-Time - Bowie Baysox (Bowie, MD)

The Bowie Baysox (Double-A Affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles) are currently accepting resumes for the immediate opening for a full-time Communications Manager position. Those interested in applying for the position must have a flexible schedule and be able to work all Baysox home games and special events in addition to regular business hours. This position is for candidates who have completed a four year college degree. This is a full-time staff position with salary and benefits based on experience. 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree Required
  • Previous Sports Marketing/Public Relations & Media Experience highly preferred
  • Strong sports writing skills (writing samples will be required)
  • Strong Managerial, leadership, and planning skills/or experience
  • Previous Supervisory Experience preferred
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize duties under extreme deadlines
  • Strong Media contacts within the Baltimore/Washington Metro area
  • Ability to positively interact with media, players, coaches, customers and staff.
  • Ability to cultivate relationships with media contacts
  • Graphics experience required (Adobe Creative Suite - Photoshop & InDesign & Illustrator)
  • Proficiency with HTML code and website operation
  • Demonstrate the ability to score a baseball game and the understanding of the game of baseball is a must. 
  • Desire and ability to work beyond traditional “business hours” including attendance at all games, and special ancillary events, as well as travel when necessary. (Night, weekend and holiday work is required at times throughout the year)
  • Experience in baseball play by play and/or sports radio broadcasting is also a plus. 

Job Functions:

  • Create interesting and unique feature pitches, story ideas, publicity events, and overall coverage for the Bowie Baysox; i.e. players, team, theme nights, and community activities designed to help sell Baysox Tickets
  • Generate sales and team related content for Baysox social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.)
  • Daily upkeep of content on team website (www.baysox.com), including posting game stories, feature stories, upcoming promotions and statistical data for home and road games
  • Conduct active follow up with media to sell releases and pitches to local media
  • Set-up meetings with local media members to generate insight, knowledge, rapport
  • Handle direct day-to-day operations and management for the Communications Department, including game employees (Stat trackers, Official Scorers, etc) and interns
  • Content and production of all team-related publications – media guide, game programs and game notes
  • Maintain professional operation of the press box before, during and after games
  • Establish and maintain weekly call-in opportunities with local sports media
  • Aid in Baysox organization marketing, community outreach and sales efforts.
  • Proficiency or experience with Major League Baseball Advance Media (MLBAM) platform is a plus
  • Assist primary broadcaster (or perform primary broadcast duties) during select home and away games.
  • Ability to speak and understand Spanish is a plus (but not required)
  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant General manager and General Manager

Qualifications include:

  • Hold a four-year degree in communications, journalism, sport management or related field
  • Previous sports writing experience and familiarity with AP style 
  • Exceptional (and demonstrable) knowledge of baseball and how to score a baseball game
  • Strong computer proficiency (Windows OS and Windows-based software) and the ability to quickly learn and operate new software
  • Ability to work long hours while remaining enthusiastic and energetic
  • Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite software (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) is preferred.
  • Experience in a baseball press box is a plus

Marketing Assistant - 2017 Season - Bowie Baysox (Bowie, MD)

The Bowie Baysox Baseball Club, Class AA Affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, are seeking candidates for the immediate opening of a Marketing Assistant for the 2017 season. Candidates should possess experience in sales, marketing and promotional event development. Candidates should possess a 4-year degree in Sport Management, Marketing or related field.  The following are potential duties that would be assigned to the Marketing Assistant.

Educational Programs:

  • Assist with the development, planning, implementation and execution of multiple educational programs within local school and library systems with the goal of increasing attendance and sales of tickets.

Youth Target:

  • Assist with the overall implementation and execution of the Baysox youth program goals for the 2017 season including:
    • Outreach to Youth Sports programs, Clubs, Organizations, Family based events, etc. to develop potential ticket sales opportunities
    • Marketing and implementation of the Baysox Kids Club.
    • Increase membership, sales, events and usage of the club throughout the year.

Community Outreach:

  • Assist with managing and implementing aspects of the Baysox Community Outreach including but not limited to the following:
    • Mascot Appearance Scheduling/Implementation
    • Scheduling National Anthem performers, Color Guards, Ceremonial First Pitches, Pre-Game Ceremonies and other game-related items.
    • Distribution of marketing materials within the community including pocket schedules, posters, fliers, etc.
    • Staffing and marketing the Baysox at community outreach events including festivals, youth sporting events, community days and more. 
    • Assist in selecting grassroots initiatives for the Baysox to be at to promote the team and coming events. 

Promotions:

  • Develop & execute promotional nights that have a target audience. Build a market audience to generate ticket sales.
  • Develop, implement and execute promotional events for Baysox fans at games. Create fun atmosphere with prizes, games, promotional events, etc.
  • Assist in directing pre-game and between inning promotional events.
  • Be outgoing and willing to participate in wacky, fun promotions on the field and within the community in front of a large audience of fans.

Database Marketing:

  • Assist in the implementation and execution of capturing data from all stadium visitors and sort by event
  • Consolidate and keep current all database information
  • Help manage the Baysox “Kids Club” events and database
  • Help manager the Baysox "Silver Sox" Club events and database
  • Oversee and Execute fan surveys in and outside of stadium

Graphic Design:

  • Design Skills in Adobe Creative Suite, especially Photoshop and Illustrator are a plus (but not required)

Other Duties as assigned by the Assistant General Manager and General Manager. 

Candidates applying for this position MUST be IMMEDIATELY available and live in the region near Bowie, MD or have access to housing in the Bowie, MD region. You must also have your own vehicle for transportation and a clean driving record. 

This position will require working all Baysox Home games during the 2017 season, potential additional stadium events as well as working nights and weekends as the game schedule, event schedule and non-game outreach schedule sets up.  

Successful candidate(s) will receive a monthly stipend through the beginning of September, 2017.  There is a possibility of full-time employment following the completion of the internship experience.
